Indian restaurant in London

The "Maharaja" in London, England, is a traditional Indian restaurant that has been a staple in the city's culinary landscape since its opening in 1967. Located in the bustling Bayswater neighborhood near Hyde Park, it has established itself over the decades as a popular meeting place for lovers of authentic Indian cuisine. The restaurant is family-run, giving it a personal touch, and is known for its specialties from the tandoor oven as well as its grilled dishes. With a history spanning over half a century, the "Maharaja" has built a reputation for quality and hospitality that attracts both locals and tourists.

Authentic Indian cuisine Bayswater

The menu at the "Maharaja" is deeply rooted in Indian culinary traditions and offers a variety of dishes prepared with fresh ingredients and traditional spices. A highlight is the "Tandoori Chicken," which is grilled in a clay oven and stands out for its juicy texture and smoky flavor— a dish that perfectly showcases the art of tandoor cooking. Also popular is the "Chicken Tikka Masala," a classic featuring tender pieces of chicken in a creamy tomato sauce enriched with aromatic spices, reflecting the British-Indian palate. For seafood lovers, the "Prawn Biryani" offers a delicious option: succulent prawns served with fragrant basmati rice and a blend of spices that adds depth to every bite. Accompanying these are freshly baked "Garlic Naan," whose buttery taste and slight crispness perfectly complement the main dishes.

The ambiance of the "Maharaja" is a successful blend of traditional charm and cozy warmth. The decor is simple yet inviting, with dark wooden furniture and subtle Indian accents that create a relaxed atmosphere. It is a smaller restaurant, which gives it an intimate feel, although it can seem a bit cramped during peak times. The open kitchen allows guests to glimpse the preparation of their meals, enhancing trust in the freshness of the dishes. There are no outdoor seating areas, but the central location makes it an ideal stop after a stroll in the nearby park or a shopping day in the area.

Indian grilled dishes with spices

The service is often described as friendly and warm, with staff striving to provide guests with an authentic experience. The drink menu includes classic Indian options like "Mango Lassi," a creamy yogurt drink with sweet mango flavor that balances the spicy dishes, as well as a selection of teas, such as "Masala Chai," which is particularly popular in the cooler months due to its warm spices. The restaurant is alcohol-free, setting it apart from other Indian establishments, but many guests find the non-alcoholic alternatives to be fitting.

First of all it's not Indian Hotel. It's named Indian but everything taste like Bangladesh food. sweet is there in all food. Please if you want to try Indian food, kindly choose a different restaurant. Hospitality is worst. No respect for guest and the place cleanliness is worst. Incorrect billing and charged more than the one we asked. I am not critic, I am someone who went out with family to have good food and ended paying 88 pounds for worst food and 10 pounds for gratitude for the service. Kindly choose a different restaurant.

On my first visit I had the chicken vindaloo because I love spicy food. If you really want an experience ask for the chicken phal, which is not on the menu and it's very spicy.

We were a group of 4 and nobody was particularly experienced in eating Indian food. I knew I liked chicken tikka masala, so we ordered that family style and they brought us other items we might like. They don’t serve alcohol, but we didn’t miss it. Highly recommend!
